The Netherlands - VAT Rate Increase

Further to previous posts discussing the intentions of the Dutch government to overhaul and reform the income tax system, it has now been confirmed that the reduced VAT rate will increase from 6% to 9% in order to facilitate this.

NL/PT - ‘Generous’ tax breaks for Expats and pensioners in Europe may be axed

Tax system shake-ups mean expats living and working in the Netherlands and Portugal who have enjoyed valuable tax breaks on their earnings, may see an end to these perks.

At present, expats working in the Netherlands and Dutch expats overseas are able to earn at least 33 per cent of their salaries tax free, provided they are able to comply with a strict set of regulations.

The Netherlands - Potential New Tax System

The Dutch government is discussing a potential new tax system to come in to place from 2019. Currently there are 4 tax brackets dependent upon an individual’s earnings ranging from 36.55% to 52%. With expats having slightly different criteria at a 30% ruling.

NL - Possible increase of tourist tax in Amsterdam

The Guardian has reported  that in 2016 Amsterdam had 17 million tourists  – that is 20 times more than its actual inhabitants. Currently tourists pay 5% of their hotel and Airbnbs costs as a tourist tax. The Alderman of Finance, Udo Kock has suggested by introducing a 10 euro fee per night on top of the existing 5% tourist tax, this will bring in a potential 150 million euros that would help the economy.
